Xero adds a month-end agent and a ChatGPT plugin at Xerocon Denver

Comingwave team · 7 minute read · published

A bookkeeper reviews blurred financial charts on a tablet at a desk with a tray of paper receipts.

Xero used its Xerocon conference in Denver, which opened on 19 August 2026, to show its next round of AI features alongside JAX, the assistant it calls its "AI finance partner". The headline items are a month-end agent built with XeroForce, a Xero plugin for ChatGPT, and a wider Microsoft 365 Copilot integration, alongside progress on automatic bank reconciliation. Most of it is labelled "coming soon", and Xero's post gives no country-by-country dates, so for an Australian business the useful work right now is preparation: clean books, clear approvals and a decision about who is allowed to connect the ledger to an AI assistant.

What Xero announced

The details come from Xero's Xerocon Denver product update, written by its President of Product, Engineering and Customer Experience. Trade publication CPA Practice Advisor reported the conference opening on the same day. Xero describes the direction as moving from a system of record to a "system of action" that acts on information "with you in control". The post covers three groups of features, and Xero describes the first as a recap of capabilities it announced at Xerocon London the month before.

JAX features inside Xero

  • Auto Bank Reconciliation. Xero says it matches high-confidence transactions to bank feeds in real time, explains why each transaction was matched and surfaces exceptions for a person to handle. Xero reports more than 100 million transactions auto-reconciled since launch, and says that in the coming months it will handle more complex cases, such as splitting a single payment across sales and fees.
  • Smart Document Capture. Reads source documents and pulls the data directly into Xero without a separate app.
  • Cash Flow Actions. JAX looks for potential cash flow gaps and helps build a plan, working alongside Payment Follow-Ups and Bill Protection.
  • Scenario Planning (coming soon). JAX will build scenarios from actual Xero data, so a business can model rising costs, a price increase or a hiring decision.
  • Xero Partner Hub and Document Requests (coming soon). For accounting and bookkeeping practices, the next version of Partner Hub will show book health, work status and month-end readiness across all clients, and JAX will request missing documents from clients, send reminders and match what comes back to transactions, with the customer approving each step.

XeroForce and the month-end agent

XeroForce is Xero's builder for custom AI agents, described in plain language rather than code. Xero says it now includes a month-end agent and other pre-built templates. The month-end agent is meant to work through the monthly routine for each client, from reviewing reconciliation status through to manual journal entries for prepayments and amortisation, and then give the customer a full account of what it did to review and accept. Xero says XeroForce is in early access, with general availability later this year.

Xero data inside ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot

Xero says a Xero plugin for ChatGPT will be available "in coming weeks" across ChatGPT's Chat, Work and Codex. It also says the Microsoft 365 Copilot integration it announced in July is expanding soon into Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Copilot Cowork, with live Xero data flowing into charts, tables and documents. For practices, Xero says customers will soon be able to switch between client organisations while working in these integrations.

What it means for an Australian SME

Cost

Xero's post does not say which plans will include each feature or what XeroForce will cost at general availability. Ask before you plan around it. There are also two costs outside Xero: the ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 Copilot integrations run inside those products, so check which of their plans you would need, and every automation needs someone to review its exceptions. Time saved on matching transactions is partly spent on checking the ones the system was not confident about, which is the right trade, but it is not zero.

Privacy and data handling

A ledger is not just numbers. It holds customer and supplier names, contact details, bank details and, where payroll is used, information about staff. Connecting it to a general-purpose AI assistant means that data can be queried from another product. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner's guidance on commercially available AI products says privacy obligations apply to personal information put into an AI system and to AI output that contains personal information, and it recommends that organisations do not enter personal information into publicly available generative AI tools. Before turning on a connector, ask:

  • Which user's permissions does the connector use, and can a staff member see more through the assistant than they can in Xero itself?
  • Is the assistant on a business plan with a workspace your administrator controls, or on someone's personal account?
  • What does the assistant's provider keep from each query, and for how long?
  • If you are a practice, have your clients agreed to their books being queried through a third-party assistant?

Staff training

Xero's framing is that routine work is automated while "human judgement stays firmly at the helm". That only works if the humans know what they are approving. The person who accepts a month-end agent's journals needs to understand prepayments and amortisation well enough to spot a wrong one. Treat the review step as a skilled task and train for it, including what to do when the explanation for a matched transaction does not look right.

Where it fits in everyday operations

For a cafe group or a trades business, the near-term gain is in the daily grind: bank lines matched without anyone touching them, receipts captured from documents, and earlier warning of a cash shortfall. For an accounting practice, the gain is visibility across many clients at once. In both cases the automation is only as good as the data feeding it. If sales, stock or job data reaches Xero through manual exports or a fragile add-on, fix that first. Reliable integration between Xero and your other business systems is what makes automatic matching trustworthy.

What to do now

AreaActionWhy now
AvailabilityAsk Xero or your advisor which features are live for Australian organisations and which plan includes themThe announcement gives no regional dates and marks several items as coming soon
Data qualityClear old unreconciled items, duplicate contacts and uncoded transactionsAutomatic matching and health checks work from what is already in the ledger
User accessReview who has which Xero role and remove accounts that are no longer neededBefore any connector or agent is switched on, you should know exactly who can reach the ledger
ApprovalsDecide who reviews and accepts agent-prepared journals and reconciliationsXero's design relies on a person approving the result
AI connectorsSet a rule for who may connect Xero to ChatGPT or Copilot, and on which accountsThe plugin is due in the coming weeks, and the first connection should not be an accident
ReportingList the questions you want answered each month, such as cash position, debtor days and margin by jobIt tells you whether a chat assistant is enough or a proper dashboard is needed

An assistant that can answer a question about your books is handy, but it does not replace an agreed set of figures the whole business looks at each month. That is the job of data dashboards built on your accounting, sales and operations data. Key takeaways

  • At Xerocon Denver, Xero showed a month-end agent in XeroForce, a ChatGPT plugin and a broader Microsoft 365 Copilot integration.
  • Several features are labelled coming soon, XeroForce is in early access, and no Australian dates or plan details were given.
  • Xero's model keeps a person approving what the automation prepares, so the review step needs a trained owner.
  • Connecting a ledger to a general AI assistant is a privacy decision as much as a convenience.
  • Clean data, tidy user access and reliable integrations decide how much of this you can safely use.

Frequently asked questions

What is Xero JAX?

JAX is the AI assistant built into Xero, which Xero describes as its AI finance partner. It powers features such as Auto Bank Reconciliation, Smart Document Capture and Cash Flow Actions, and Xero says it is designed to act on information with the customer in control.

When will the XeroForce month-end agent be available?

Xero says XeroForce is currently in early access, with general availability later this year. The announcement does not give a date for Australia, so check with Xero or your accountant before planning around it.

Can I use my Xero data in ChatGPT?

Xero says a Xero plugin for ChatGPT will be available in the coming weeks across Chat, Work and Codex. Before connecting it, decide which accounts may be used and check what access the plugin has to your organisation's data.

Does automatic bank reconciliation remove the need for a bookkeeper?

No. Xero says the feature matches high-confidence transactions and surfaces exceptions that need human expertise. Someone still has to deal with the exceptions, review the results and handle the judgement calls.

What should a small business do first to prepare?

Tidy the ledger and the user list. Clear old unreconciled items, remove users who no longer need access, and agree who approves anything an automated feature prepares.
