AI CV and job-search tools moved from specialist apps into widely used products during the past ten weeks. On 1 June 2026 OpenAI added job search and resume formatting to ChatGPT. On 25 June Google set out three of its own AI tools for job seekers. On 7 July Indeed said it was testing a feature that drafts job applications for a candidate, then on 4 August paused its automatic mode.
For job seekers this means a tailored CV and cover letter can be produced quickly. For a small employer it is likely to mean more applications, more of them well written, and less information in the writing itself.
What happened
ChatGPT added job search and resume formatting. OpenAI's ChatGPT release notes for 1 June 2026 say ChatGPT can now surface live job listings and freelance work from sources such as Indeed, Upwork and Appcast, personalised to a person's experience, skills and goals, with links to apply on the source site. The same note says people can upload or create a resume, tailor it to a specific role and download it in a professional format. Job search is limited to users in the United States. Resume formatting is available in English globally on the web, on all plans, including the free one.
Google pointed job seekers to three of its AI tools. A post on Google's blog on 25 June 2026, Try these 3 Google AI tools to help find your next job, pairs Career Dreamer for working out which roles to target, NotebookLM for refining a resume and cover letter, and Gemini Live for practising answers to sample interview questions and getting live feedback.
Indeed tested applying on a candidate's behalf, then pulled back. On 7 July 2026 Indeed announced a limited United States test of Apply For Me, which drafts application content from what a job seeker has already told Indeed: profile, experience, location, pay expectations and role preferences. Job seekers could review each draft before it was sent or opt into what Indeed called a more streamlined experience. Indeed said submissions were capped and that the feature was not designed for unlimited applying. An update on 4 August says Indeed is pausing the automatic application mode, based on feedback, and concentrating on the mode where the job seeker reviews each application first. Indeed describes the feature as an early test and not a full launch.
Employers reported the other side. In a survey Indeed published with its 15 June sourcing announcement, conducted by The Harris Poll for Indeed among 300 United States hiring managers at companies with 500 or more employees between 19 May and 1 June 2026, 71 per cent said higher application volume makes qualified candidates harder to find and 72 per cent feared they were missing top talent because of the volume of applications. The survey covers large American employers, so treat it as a signal only.

The Australian Public Service Commission's page on AI in recruitment, published on 20 April 2026, links to principles for candidates. They say candidates may use AI to draft applications and prepare for interviews unless an agency asks them not to, that the details must be factually correct and a true account of their own experience, and that an agency may ask how AI was used.
Why it matters
The cost of applying has fallen. When tailoring a CV took an evening, the effort was a rough filter. A candidate who rewrote their application for your role probably wanted it. Now the rewriting is one prompt, in a tool they already have open.
Polish no longer tells you much. Clear structure, matching keywords and a confident summary used to say something about care and communication. Today they mostly say the applicant used a tool, which for many roles is a useful skill. The claims underneath still have to be true.
The platforms themselves are wary of volume. Indeed's pause is the notable signal. A company whose business is applications paused fully automatic applying and kept the version where the person reads each one. In a separate post on 25 June, Indeed told job seekers that volume alone does not always work and that they often benefit more from a smaller number of thoughtful applications.
Matching is shifting from documents to profiles. Both ChatGPT's job search and Indeed's test work from what the system knows about a person, not only a document they upload. For job seekers, an accurate and complete profile matters more than it did.
A CV builder such as Build AI CV, which tailors a CV and a matching cover letter to a pasted job advertisement, is one example of the tools now within reach of any applicant.
What this means for businesses
A small employer cannot out-read a flood of well-written applications, and trying to detect AI writing is a poor use of time. Change what you ask for and what you check.
- Say where you stand. Add one line to each advertisement: AI help with writing is fine, everything stated must be true, and you may ask about it.
- Ask two or three specific questions. Short questions tied to the job, such as a licence held or availability for a roster, sort applicants faster than a cover letter.
- Collect structured answers. An application form on your own website, with required fields, gives you comparable data instead of forty differently formatted PDFs.
- Move the proof later, and make it real. A short paid work sample, a phone call or a practical task shows what the document cannot.
- Verify what matters. Check qualifications, licences and references for the people you shortlist.
If you are the one applying, the same developments point to simple rules. Use the tools to tighten and tailor, and read every line before it goes out under your name. Keep the facts exact, because they may be checked. Apply to fewer roles that fit, which is close to what Indeed advised on 25 June. And be ready to explain how you used AI if you are asked.
On the systems side, a careers page with a proper application form is part of a well-built business website. Sending those applications into the tools you already use for HR, payroll or client records is a job for business systems and integrations. We also work with recruitment businesses on the platforms behind that process. To talk it through, request a quote or a first conversation.
Key takeaways
- Since 1 June 2026 ChatGPT can tailor and format a resume for a specific role, on every plan, in English, on the web.
- Indeed announced a test of AI-drafted applications on 7 July, then paused the automatic mode on 4 August and kept the review-first mode.
- A well-written application is easier to produce, so it tells an employer less than it used to.
- Small employers do better with specific questions, structured forms, practical tasks and verification than with trying to spot AI writing.
- Job seekers should use the tools, keep every claim true and send fewer, better-matched applications.
Frequently asked questions
Should a small business reject applications written with AI?
That is your decision, and nothing in the announcements covered here gives employers a way to tell. For many jobs sensible use of these tools is a skill you want. Set an honesty rule, ask job-specific questions and verify the claims of the people you shortlist.
Can employers detect AI-written CVs?
The announcements covered here do not include a detection tool for employers, and this article has not tested any. Time is better spent on questions and checks that an AI tool cannot answer for the candidate.
Is ChatGPT's job search available in Australia?
Not according to OpenAI's release notes of 1 June 2026, which limit job search to users in the United States. Resume formatting is listed as available in English globally on the web for all plans.
Did Indeed stop its Apply For Me feature?
No. Indeed's update of 4 August 2026 says it paused the automatic application mode and is focusing on the mode where job seekers review each application before it is sent. It remains a limited test in the United States.
What should an advertisement say about candidates using AI?
Keep it to a sentence or two. The Australian Public Service principles are one model: AI may be used to help prepare an application, the content must be accurate and the candidate's own, and you may ask how it was used.
